Can you target belly fat?

This is a big misconception when it comes to losing fat. It doesn’t help when you see people/brands advertising their plans and workouts claiming they target belly fat and will give you 6 pack abs.

This can trick people into thinking they can just lose their belly and have done with it. Unfortunately this is not the case. It is not possible to target certain areas to lose weight (fat) Its funny because I can’t even tell you how many times my mum has asked me “how do I get rid of my belly?”. She always says she just wants to get rid of this part but doesn’t want to lose weight anywhere else. I keep telling her the unfortunate truth that if anything, the belly may be the last place to go. Everyone is different and we all lose fat differently. Personally, my legs will lean out first, then my upper body and finally my belly/lower back area (love handles).

I know some people who have competed that are completely shredded top half and waist, but the legs are still holding onto fat for dear life.

So if you want to lose your belly, here are a few main points to follow.

. Avoid eating trans fats.

. Eat plenty of soluble fibre.

. Avoid too many sugary foods.

. Eat a balanced diet, (carbohydrates, Fats, Protein), Increasing your protein intake.

. Exercise regularly. This can be as simple as going for long walks, to jogging, playing recreational sports, workout classes or weight training etc. 

. Ensure you are in a calories deficit.

. Be consistent.

Adding to the point of ensuring you are in calorie have to be mindful of the types of calories you eat. Making sure you are fulfilling your dietary requirements with essential fatty acids and vitamins can effect your bodies metabolism and the way it burns fat. If you feel you aren’t getting the vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids in your daily diet, supplementing them can be a great option. 

Losing fat is not an easy process so you need to have a plan in place, a diet plan and maybe even look into hiring a coach/PT.

Having something to work to will increase your chances of adhering to the task ahead.

Do not try to lose weight as quick as you can, it is not a race. You want your weight loss to be as easy as you can make it and therefore for the slower the better. An aggressive calories deficit is difficult to sustain and it will only increase the chance of failure and rebound. Make this a lifestyle change, not a quick fix.
